Love Samorodok

I love this technique. Samorodok is a Russian word meaning ‘metal in it’s pure or natural state.

Otherwise known as reticulation, this technique involves carefully heating the metal to near melting point and then cooling it abruptly in water. It creates a textured, molten effect on the surface. It’s a fine line between molten and melted and a few pieces definitely ended up in the scrap pile.

The process was made popular in Russia and was widely used by famous silversmiths, such as Fabergé. I love skirting the line between art and molten mess and like to shape and refine the silver shapes after the reticulation process so that there is a modern refined finish to each piece.
